Global Engagement – University of Miami Alumni Association’s New Strategic Plan

Aligned with University of Miami President’s visionary “Roadmap to Our New Century,” the University of Miami Alumni Association’s 2018-2025 strategic plan establishes priorities for alumni involvement in the institution’s emerging future across geographic, cultural, and intellectual borders. The alumni association will focus on strengthening alumni engagement across four areas – global network, developing a pipeline of alumni leadership and financial support, designing a life-long engagement model and developing the people, processes, technology and data to champion strategic alumni engagement.

Dr. Frenk became 6th President of the University of Miami in 2015 and immediately launched the ambitious “Roadmap” process.

Built on the concepts of The Napa Group’s Platform Strategy for Constituent Engagement in Higher Education, the plan sets targets for expanded, more integrated activities across the “ecosystem” of the alumni lifecycle – multiple interactions across the university from enrollment through lifelong relationships. Importantly, the association’s strategy champions an institutional cultural shift toward “one single view” of the alumni “customer” to benefit both alumni and the university. Understanding that better data and more sophisticated technology foster more relevant alumni engagement, the association is partnering in university-wide efforts to improve and apply alumni, student, parent and donor data for current and future engagement opportunities.

“Through their work with us, The Napa Group challenged us to develop our strategic plan in a condensed timeline of one, not two years,” said Erica Arroyo, B.S.C. ’03, M.A.L.S. ’08, who is Interim Association Vice President, Alumni Relations and Annual Giving and overseeing the plan’s multi-year implementation activities. “It’s a very solid plan, very collaborative across the campus and with our volunteers, and a final product that we and the university can be very proud of.”

The association’s Strategic Planning Council functioned as a liaison to volunteer leadership and selected representatives from other offices in the university. The plan originated under the leadership of Donna A. Arbide, M.B.A. ’95, who was Executive Director of the UM Alumni Association and now is Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations at The George Washington University in Washington, D.C., and Brenda Yester Baty, B.B.A. ’90, then President of the Association, and Frank Jimenez, B.S. ’87, current President.
